How to Drape a Saree for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide

Wearing a saree for the first time can feel daunting — but with a little practice, it becomes second nature. This guide walks you through the most popular draping style, the Nivi drape (widely worn across India), so you can look effortlessly elegant for any occasion.

What You'll Need

  • A saree (5.5–6.5 metres)
  • A matching or contrast blouse
  • A petticoat (underskirt) in a matching colour
  • Safety pins (3–5)
  • Heels or flat sandals

Step 1: Wear Your Petticoat and Blouse

Tie your petticoat snugly at the waist — it should sit at your natural waist, not your hips. Put on your blouse. The petticoat colour should ideally match the border of your saree so it doesn't show through.

Step 2: Tuck in the Plain End

Start with the plain (non-pallu) end of the saree. Tuck it into the petticoat at your right hip, going all the way around once. The bottom edge of the saree should just graze the floor.

Step 3: Make the Pleats

After the first wrap, gather 5–7 neat pleats (each about 5 cm wide) and tuck them into the petticoat at the centre front, slightly to the left. The pleats should fall straight and face left. Pin them in place with a safety pin.

Step 4: Wrap Around Again

Take the remaining fabric and wrap it around your waist once more, from right to left.

Step 5: Drape the Pallu

Bring the remaining fabric (the pallu — the decorative end) over your left shoulder. Let it fall to knee length at the back. You can pin the pallu to your blouse at the shoulder for a secure hold.

Step 6: Final Adjustments

Even out the pleats, check the hem is uniform all around, and use a safety pin at the waist if needed. You're ready!

Tips for a Polished Look

  • Lighter fabrics like chiffon and georgette drape more fluidly and are great for beginners.
  • Silk sarees like Maheshwari or Tussar hold pleats beautifully once you get the hang of them.
  • Practice at home a few times before the big day.
  • Use a non-slip petticoat to keep everything in place.
